Wei Hui: Shanghai Baby
Never finished it. I find it very hard to have any sympathy for a main character who constantly whines about her life yet can afford to fly to Beijiing on a whim while unemployed. The sex scenes were not that good either. (*)
Haruki Murakami: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World: A Novel (Vintage International)
Very interesting look at conciousness and other mind scrambling ideas. (*****)
Neal Stephenson: Cryptonomicon
Excellent, fun historical-science-fiction (*****)
Paul Theroux: Riding the Iron Rooster: By Train Through China
Skip the first 50 pages and the book is a pretty good read. The first 50 pages are mostly the author stroking his own ego which is the size of a planet. (***)
Edward W. Said: Culture and Imperialism
A must read for understanding modern America and its relation to the globe. I think that it is particularly important because of the ongoing war in Iraq. (*****)
